Instructions
Technical writing is an inherently creative process, creating instructions is no exception.
Guest Instructions for a Vacation Rental
Instructions come in all forms, from a thick auto user-manual to the laminated safety instructions in your airplane seat-back pocket. As a technical writer, I take notice of instructions that capture my attention by being more than just text on paper. The more creative, colorful, or unique, the more likely it is that I will at least look at the instructions before I attempt to figure it out on my own.
For this set of instructions I took cues from the context: a beachy little bungalow run by a sweet, young family. When guests check in to the Surf Shack they are greeted by the relaxed, boho personality of the space. Filled with plants and soothing colors, the space is brightened by plenty of sunny spots, including the bright yellow barstools in the kitchen.

I took the existing, plain text guest information handbook and worked to create something that fit the personality of the space and the hosts that would also catch the guest's attention. The goal is to help the guests to access the information that they need to make the most of their stay, while also helping the hosts manage the space and rental schedule.

This is the first four pages that we have completed. The project is ongoing and will eventually include wifi information, instructions for the television remote, and a map of places to walk or bike to in the nearby areas.
